Hormone Love Can Overcome Shyness

People with autism and people who have a shy nature often have a problem in the association. Now researchers have developed an inhaler that contains the hormone oxytocin in love or that can increase one's skill in socializing.

This hormone can increase the sense of empathy so called love hormone. In women, this hormone also plays an important role to achieve orgasm.

In a study conducted by a team from the Seaver Autism Center andColumbia University, oxytocin is proven to overcome shyness. But hormone therapy is not effective in individuals who naturally have enough confidence.

Proof involved 27 adults who received oxytocin and placebo spray at random. Once sprayed in the nose, the participants underwent tests to measure levels of empathy and the ability to understand other people's feelings.

In the participants who originally had a shy nature, oxytocin in nasal spray was effective in improving a sense of empathy and reduce the sense of shame. But the original participants who were confident, the effect is not very visible.

This proves that the selective effect of oxytocin in enhancing social cognition. The effect only appears if there is hormonal imbalance that causes a person is not good at socializing.

"Though still need to be further investigated, these results suggest that oxytocin has the potential to treat social problems in people with social dysfunction, including autism," said Prof. Jennifer Bartz
